Brand Story
The Grönefeld family watchmaking history dates back to 1912, when Johan Grönefeld began working as a watchmaker in Oldenzaal. Brothers Bart and Tim grew up next to the local church clock, which their grandfather and father maintained. After training in Switzerland and working at the prestigious Renaud & Papi workshop on high-end complications, they returned to the Netherlands and founded their own brand in 2008, launching the GPHG-winning GTM-06 Tourbillon.
Design Language
The exterior of a Grönefeld watch is classic and understated, featuring elegant 1941 cases with sculpted hollowed-out lugs and clean, classical dials. The real visual spectacle is on the reverse side. The movements feature bell-shaped bridges crafted from stainless steel rather than brass or German silver. The steel is finished with mirror-polished bevels, micro-blasted centers, and relief engraving, creating a striking contrast of textures.
Movements & Manufacturing
Grönefeld movements are highly complex and engineered in-house. Bart and Tim specialize in complications like independent deadbeat seconds (the One Hertz) and constant-force mechanisms (the 1941 Remontoire). Their choice of stainless steel for movement bridges makes fabrication extremely difficult but results in superior structural stability and a unique, bright look.
Notable Models
1941 Principia: The brand’s first automatic watch, featuring a solid gold rotor and a central sweep second hand.
1941 Remontoire: A manual-wind watch with an eight-second constant force mechanism that delivers uniform energy to the escapement.
1941 Grönograaf: A highly complex chronograph featuring a soft-reset governor mechanism to protect the hands from shock.
Why Enthusiasts Care
Grönefeld watches represent some of the highest standards of hand-finishing in contemporary watchmaking. By building their movements with steel bridges—a material rarely used due to its hardness—they have created a distinct technical and aesthetic signature that is highly prized by collectors of high-end independent horology.
