Brand Story
Nomos was founded by Roland Schwertner in January 1990, just two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Schwertner was inspired by the purity of the Deutscher Werkbund and the historic watchmaking legacy of Glashütte. Starting with just three watchmakers, the brand debuted the iconic Tangente in 1992. Over the decades, Nomos transitioned from using Swiss ebauches to developing completely proprietary in-house calibres. In 2014, they introduced the Nomos Swing System, a proprietary escapement that declared their complete independence from Swiss movement cartels.
Design Language
Nomos’ design language is defined by the principles of the Bauhaus and the Deutscher Werkbund: form follows function. The brand is famous for its clean typography, extremely slender cases, elegant wire-like lugs, and an adventurous but restrained use of color (including pastel dial options). Dials are designed in Berlin, while the engineering and assembly are carried out in Glashütte.
Movements & Manufacturing
Nomos is a true manufacture. All of its movements are designed and built in-house in Glashütte. Their manual-wind Calibre Alpha serves as the foundation of the brand, while their automatic DUW series incorporates the proprietary Nomos Swing System escapement and the innovative, ultra-thin neomatik architecture. Every movement features traditional Glashütte decorations like ribbing, perlage, and tempered blue screws.
Notable Models
Tangente: The brand’s signature model, featuring a round case, angled lugs, and alternating Arabic numerals and stick indices.
Club: A sportier, more youthful design with a thicker case, rounded typography, and high water resistance.
Metro: A contemporary design featuring wire lugs, a power reserve indicator, and mint-green accents.
Why Enthusiasts Care
For watch collectors, Nomos Glashütte represents one of the best value propositions in mechanical watchmaking. Unlike many brands at this price point that rely on off-the-shelf Swiss movements, Nomos designs, builds, and regulates its own calibres in-house, all while maintaining a highly distinct, award-winning design language that stands out in any collection.
