Ressence is an independent watch brand based in Antwerp, Belgium, founded by industrial designer Benoît Mintiens. By applying principles of user-centered design to watchmaking, Ressence eliminated traditional hands and crowns, creating a unique display where time is read from revolving discs that orbit one another under a curved sapphire crystal.

Brand Story
Ressence debuted at Baselworld in 2010 with the Zero Series, the brainchild of Benoît Mintiens. Mintiens wanted to apply modern industrial design thinking to mechanical watches, looking to improve legibility and case ergonomics. The name Ressence is a portmanteau of ‘Renaissance’ and ‘essence.’ In 2013, Ressence released the Type 3, the world’s first oil-filled mechanical watch, cementing the brand’s place as a modern mechanical innovator.
Design Language
Ressence watches look like pebble-like smooth sculptures. They feature dome-like sapphire crystals that flow seamlessly into titanium cases, and they have no crown, utilizing the caseback for winding and setting. Dials are entirely flat and flush-mounted, with painted indicators filled with Super-LumiNova. Time is read via the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS).
Movements & Manufacturing
The core of a Ressence is the patented ROCS module, which sits on top of a highly modified Swiss automatic movement (primarily the ETA 2824-2). The ROCS module uses a complex train of gears to translate the base movement’s minute rotation into orbiting hours, seconds, and days. In the Type 3 and Type 5, the ROCS module is submerged in oil, which eliminates light refraction and makes the dial readable from any angle.
Notable Models
Type 1: The slimmest watch in the collection, featuring a modern, crownless case and a clean orbital display.
Type 3: The oil-filled model that uses magnetic transmission to connect the dry movement base with the oil-submerged display.
Type 8: An entry-level, highly streamlined watch focusing purely on hours and minutes in a lightweight case.
Why Enthusiasts Care
Ressence is one of the very few brands that has successfully reimagined how time is displayed mechanically. By viewing watchmaking through the lens of industrial design rather than historic nostalgia, they have created a modern aesthetic that is technically complex but beautifully simple on the wrist.
