Brand Story

Atelier Wen was established in 2018 by Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron. The founders met in 2016 while studying in Beijing, where they bonded over a shared fascination with watchmaking and Chinese culture. Tallendier’s previous experience working with the French Ministry of Finance to study the Chinese watch industry gave him a unique perspective on the country’s manufacturing capabilities.

Determined to challenge the negative connotations of the “Made in China” label, they launched Atelier Wen. The name itself reflects this cultural bridge: atelier is French for workshop, while wén (文) is the Chinese character representing culture, literature, and art. Their initial debut collection, Porcelain Odyssey, launched via Kickstarter in late 2018, featuring porcelain dials that paid homage to traditional Chinese porcelain craftsmanship.

Design Language

The brand’s design aesthetic centers on combining classic Chinese motifs with modern watch architecture. While their first series utilized clean, circular cases and porcelain-painted dials, their flagship collection—the Perception—is a modern steel integrated-bracelet sports watch. The design of the Perception features subtle nods to traditional Chinese architecture, such as the case profile which takes inspiration from the sweeping eaves of pagodas, and a dial frame that echoes the symmetry of Chinese windows.

Movements & Manufacturing

Atelier Wen is transparent about its manufacturing, proudly emphasizing its Chinese supply chain. A cornerstone of the brand’s identity is its collaboration with Master Cheng Yucai, a self-taught guilloché master based in Henan province. Cheng hand-turns each dial for the Perception collection on customized rose-engine machines that he designed and built himself. Each dial requires several hours of painstaking manual labor, resulting in an intricate, light-catching “fish scale” (écaille de poisson) pattern where no two dials are identical.

For movements, the brand collaborates with the Dandong (Peacock) Watch Factory. The Perception collection is powered by the Dandong Calibre SL1588, a customized high-beat automatic movement. Atelier Wen worked closely with Dandong to customize the caliber: it is modified to a slim 3.4mm profile, regulated in five positions to run within +/- 10 seconds per day, and lacks the typical “ghost date” position on the crown, ensuring mechanical integrity and a clean dial layout.

Notable Models

Porcelain Odyssey (2018): The brand’s debut series, featuring dials made of Chinese porcelain in shades of white and blue, paired with leaf-shaped hands and subdial configurations inspired by traditional Chinese astronomical instruments.

Perception (2022–Present): The brand’s flagship integrated-bracelet sports watch. It features a 40mm 904L stainless steel case (and titanium in select special editions), an ultra-comfortable bracelet with an on-the-fly micro-adjustment clasp, and the signature hand-turned guilloché dial made by Master Cheng Yucai.

Why Enthusiasts Care

Atelier Wen has earned a dedicated following because it offers authentic, handmade artisan craft at a fraction of the cost of Swiss equivalents. Traditional hand-turned guilloché is rarely found on watches priced under five figures; by collaborating with Chinese master artisans, Atelier Wen offers this level of dial finishing at an accessible, independent price point. Furthermore, the brand’s honest and proud celebration of high-quality Chinese watchmaking has resonated with modern collectors who value transparency and cultural originality over marketing hype.
