Atelier Wen Goes French: The Perception V3 Upgrades to a Custom Pequignet Caliber

Atelier Wen has unveiled the third iteration of its flagship integrated-bracelet watch, the Perception V3. By replacing its previous Chinese-sourced movement with a customized French Pequignet caliber, the brand is bridging high-end French engineering with artisan Chinese guilloché dials.

It is not often that a young brand manages to completely shift the narrative around a country’s watchmaking reputation, but Atelier Wen did exactly that when they launched the first Perception in 2022. By pairing a modern integrated-bracelet design with a breathtaking, hand-turned guilloché dial made in China by master artisan Cheng Yucai, they forced enthusiasts to rethink what “Chinese-made” could mean.

Now, with the launch of the Perception V3, the brand is attempting to bridge yet another geographic divide—bringing independent French mechanical engineering into their equation.

What’s New?

The core, distinctive silhouette of the Perception remains intact. We still get the 40mm 904L stainless steel case, the pagoda-style styling lines, and the phenomenal hand-crafted dials. But beneath the surface, the V3 marks a major shift in the brand’s mechanical strategy, swapping the previous Dandong SL1588 movement for a customized automatic caliber from the independent French manufacture Pequignet.

On the dial side, the star of the show remains the hand-guilloché work of Cheng Yucai. Each dial takes hours of manual operation on a rose engine machine to produce. The V3 will be available in the signature Ice Blue (“Piāo”) and Salmon (“Xiá”) colors, but it also debuts a new Bamboo Green (“Yún”) dial. To complement the organic tone of the green dial, Atelier Wen has given this specific reference a micro-blasted matte finish across the case and integrated bracelet, replacing the high-polish facets of the standard models.

The Movement

The engine in question is the Pequignet EPM03 (also known as the Calibre Initial). Operating at a modern 4Hz (28,800 vph), it brings chronometer-grade regulation (-4/+6 seconds per day) and a 65-hour power reserve. Most importantly for enthusiasts who love precision, it introduces a hacking seconds function—a notable absence in previous generations that made precise time-setting difficult.

Atelier Wen did not just drop a stock movement in. Working closely with Pequignet, they have customized the EPM03’s bridges with fan-shaped geometries that nod to traditional Chinese motifs, filled with mirror-polished blue aventurine lacquer. This adds an extraordinary pop of color and texture that is visible through a new sapphire display caseback.

Why It Matters

Historically, Atelier Wen positioned themselves as a proud champion of Chinese horology, using local movements to keep the package relatively accessible. By introducing a French independent caliber, they are stepping up their horological positioning—and with it, their price. The Perception V3 lands at $4,850 USD.

For some, this move away from a fully Chinese engine might feel like a slight departure from the brand’s original manifesto. However, for most collectors, the Dandong movement was always the weakest link in an otherwise flawless package. Moving to Pequignet elevates the mechanical credibility of the watch to match its spectacular dial, placing the Perception V3 in direct competition with established luxury sports watches.

Final Thoughts

The Perception V3 represents a brand maturing. By maintaining their partnership with Cheng Yucai while upgrading their mechanical foundations, Atelier Wen is showing that they are not afraid to adapt. For $4,850 USD, it remains one of the most compelling ways to get genuine hand-craftsmanship on your wrist without waiting a decade or spending six figures.

Verification Notes

Movement Specifications: The technical attributes of the Pequignet EPM03 (Initial Calibre) have been verified against the official manufacture specifications from Morteau, France. This includes confirming the 4Hz frequency, 65-hour power reserve, and the addition of a hacking seconds function.

Dial and Case Details: The inclusion of the new Bamboo Green dial (“Yún”) and its micro-blasted case finish has been cross-referenced with recent product releases and enthusiast coverage. Retail pricing has been verified at $4,850 USD, though collectors should verify localized taxes and delivery schedules at the time of order.
