Brand Story
De Bethune was founded in 2002 by master watchmaker Denis Flageollet and collector David Zanetta. Flageollet, a fourth-generation watchmaker, wanted to create watches that took 18th-century horological questions (such as shock absorption and thermal expansion) and solved them using modern science. The brand has filed dozens of patents, developing custom balances, shock absorbers, and spherical moonphase indicators that have redefined high-end horology.
Design Language
The De Bethune aesthetic is futuristic and architectural. Signature design elements include hollowed-out ‘floating’ lugs that articulate to fit the wrist, delta-shaped bridges, spherical moonphase complications made of steel and palladium, and a deep, mirror-polished blue color achieved by heating titanium to precise temperatures.
Movements & Manufacturing
De Bethune movements are designed and built entirely in-house. They feature patented innovations, including a silicon/white gold balance wheel, a shock-absorbing system that protects the balance staff, and self-regulating twin barrels. The finish of the movements is exceptional, showcasing polished chamfers and blued components.
Notable Models
DB28: The brand’s defining model, featuring floating lugs, a crown at 12 o’clock, and a spherical moonphase at 6 o’clock.
DB28XP: An ultra-thin iteration of the DB28, celebrating 10 years of the design with an exceptionally low profile case.
DB25: A more classic interpretation of De Bethune watchmaking, featuring integrated hollowed lugs and traditional dials.
Why Enthusiasts Care
De Bethune is a masterclass in modern horology. Rather than replicating old movement designs, Denis Flageollet actively pushes mechanical watchmaking forward with new inventions. The brand’s striking aesthetic, combined with superior comfort on the wrist and incredible mechanical substance, makes it a true grail brand for serious collectors.
