Brand Story
Sternglas was founded in 2016 by Dustin Fontaine in Hamburg. After working in the watch industry and noting the high price of minimalist German watches, Fontaine launched a crowdfunding campaign to create a brand that offered Bauhaus design principles (form follows function) at an attainable price. The brand’s name translates to “star glass,” reflecting the domed sapphire crystals that are standard across their collections.
Design Language
The brand’s aesthetic is strictly Bauhaus-inspired. Dials feature thin, precise indices, needle hands, and spacious layouts that prioritize clarity. Sternglas cases are round, slim, and designed to sit unobtrusively on the wrist, utilizing neutral color palettes with occasional blue or orange accents inspired by the maritime heritage of Hamburg.
Movements & Manufacturing
To maintain accessible pricing, Sternglas utilizes both quartz and mechanical automatic movements from Miyota and Seiko, as well as premium Sellita movements for their higher-end German-assembled editions. Design and engineering are handled in Hamburg, with assembly divided between partners in Asia and Germany.
Notable Models
Naos (2018): The brand’s signature model, featuring a highly minimalist dial, curved hands, and thin profile case available in quartz and automatic.
Hamburg (2020): A pilot-style field watch featuring detailed instrument markings and a clean maritime style.
Kanton (2019): A premium, German-assembled dress watch featuring a Swiss Sellita movement and high-finish dial details.
Why Enthusiasts Care
Sternglas is appreciated because they make minimalist German design accessible. Classic Bauhaus watches from brands like Nomos Glashütte or Junghans can be out of reach for entry-level enthusiasts; Sternglas provides the same clean, geometric styling and sapphire glass at a fraction of the cost, making them a great entry point into watch collecting.
