Brand Story
Ming was co-founded in 2017 by Ming Thein, a renowned commercial photographer, designer, and watch collector, alongside a small group of watch enthusiasts. Seeking to create watches that focus on the interaction of light, material, and geometry, Ming Thein developed a distinct design language. The brand won the “Grand Prix” Horological Revelation prize in 2019 for the Ming 17.06, cementing their status as a global design powerhouse.
Design Language
Ming’s design language is highly recognizable, featuring flared “scallop” lugs, hand-less concentric ring displays, and laser-etched sapphire dials that appear to float. They utilize layers of sapphire, radial finishing, and intense Super-LumiNova coatings to create dials that change look in different light conditions, creating a distinct sci-fi aesthetic.
Movements & Manufacturing
While designed in Malaysia, Ming watches are manufactured and assembled in Switzerland. The brand works with premium movement specialists, utilizing modified Sellita movements for entry-level models, and collaborating with manufacture houses like Schwarz-Etienne, Kenissi, and Agenhor for their high-end, proprietary calibers.
Notable Models
17.09 (2021): An entry-level daily watch featuring a laser-etched sapphire crystal dial and a modified Sellita movement.
19.01 (2018): A premium model showcasing a Schwarz-Etienne movement and gradient sapphire dial layout.
37.07 (2022): A modern chronograph featuring a mosaic dial that lights up dramatically under UV light.
Why Enthusiasts Care
Ming has captured enthusiast interest because of its uncompromising design integrity and refusal to follow vintage trends. Rather than releasing retro-style divers, Ming focuses on a fresh, modern aesthetic and innovative dial technologies. Their limited production, unique case geometries, and distinctive style have made their releases highly competitive and highly sought after by collectors.
